Background: Elevated platelet count (PLTc) is associated with first-episode schizophrenia and adverse outcomes in individuals with precursory psychosis. However, the impact of antipsychotic medications on PLTc and its association with symptom improvement remain unclear. Aims: We aimed to investigate changes in PLTc levels following antipsychotic treatment and assess whether PLTc can predict antipsychotic responses and metabolic changes after accounting for other related variables. Methods: A total of 2985 patients with schizophrenia were randomised into seven groups. Each group received one of seven antipsychotic treatments and was assessed at 2, 4 and 6 weeks. Clinical symptoms were evaluated using the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS). Additionally, we measured blood cell counts and metabolic parameters, such as blood lipids. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to examine the effect of antipsychotics on PLTc changes, while structural equation modelling was used to assess the predictive value of PLTc on PANSS changes. Results: PLTc significantly increased in patients treated with aripiprazole (F=6.00, p=0.003), ziprasidone (F=7.10, p<0.001) and haloperidol (F=3.59, p=0.029). It exhibited a positive association with white blood cell count and metabolic indicators. Higher baseline PLTc was observed in non-responders, particularly in those defined by the PANSS-negative subscale. In the structural equation model, PLTc, white blood cell count and a latent metabolic variable predicted the rate of change in the PANSS-negative subscale scores. Moreover, higher baseline PLTc was observed in individuals with less metabolic change, although this association was no longer significant after accounting for baseline metabolic values. Conclusions: Platelet parameters, specifically PLTc, are influenced by antipsychotic treatment and could potentially elevate the risk of venous thromboembolism in patients with schizophrenia. Elevated PLTc levels and associated factors may impede symptom improvement by promoting inflammation. Given PLTc's easy measurement and clinical relevance, it warrants increased attention from psychiatrists. Trial registration number: ChiCTR-TRC-10000934.

Assembling multi-anionic groups is conducive to utilizing respective advantage to achieve the enhancement of optical performance. Two new hydroxyfluorooxoborates, Rb2B3O3F4(OH) and K8Cs2B15O14(OH)7F20·H2O with [B3O3F4(OH)] six-membered rings were synthesized for the first time. The title compounds exhibit short ultraviolet cutoff edges (< 200 nm) and K8Cs2B15O14(OH)7F20·H2O possesses a moderate experimental refractive index difference of 0.051@546.1 nm.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an intelligent diagnosis model based on the LASSO method to predict the severity of COVID-19 patients. Methods: The study uses the clinical data of 500 COVID-19 patients from a designated hospital in Guangzhou, China, and selects eight features, including age, sex, dyspnea, comorbidity, complication, lymphocytes (LYM), CRP, and lung injury score, as the most important predictors of COVID-19 severity. The study applies the LASSO method to perform feature selection and regularization, and compares the LASSO method with other machine learning methods, such as ridge regression, support vector machine, and random forest. Results: The study finds that the ridge regression model has the best performance among the four models, with an AUROC of 0.92 in the internal validation and 0.91 in the external validation. Conclusion: The study provides a simple, robust, and interpretable model for the intelligent diagnosis of COVID-19 severity, and a convenient and practical tool for the public and the health care workers to assess COVID-19 severity. However, the study also has some limitations and directions for future research, such as the need for more data from different sources and settings, and from prospective, longitudinal, multi-class classification models. The study hopes to contribute to the prevention and control of COVID-19, and to the improvement of the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown excellent performance in the field of drug delivery. Despite the synthesis of a vast array of MOFs exceeding 100,000 varieties, certain formulations have exhibited suboptimal performance characteristics. Therefore, there is a pressing need to enhance their efficacy by identifying MOFs with superior drug loading capacities and minimal cytotoxicity, which can be achieved through machine learning (ML). In this study, a stacking regression model was developed to predict drug loading capacity and cytotoxicity of MOFs using datasets compiled from various literature sources. The model exhibited exceptional predictive capabilities, achieving R2 values of 0.907 for drug loading capacity and 0.856 for cytotoxicity. Furthermore, various model interpretation methods including partial dependence plots, individual conditional expectation, Shapley additive explanation, decision tree, random forest, CatBoost Regressor, and light gradient-boosting machine were employed for feature importance analysis. The results revealed that specific metal atoms such as Zn, Cr, Fe, Zr, and Cu significantly influenced the drug loading capacity and cytotoxicity of MOFs. Through model validation encompassing experimental validation and computational verification, the reliability of the model was thoroughly established. In general, it is a good practice to use ML methods for predicting drug loading capacity and cytotoxicity analysis of MOFs, guiding the development of future property prediction methods for MOFs.

Previous studies have demonstrated an association between lymphatic vessels and diseases caused by bacterial infections. Listeria monocytogenes (LM) bacterial infection can affect multiple organs, including the intestine, brain, liver and spleen, which can be fatal. However, the impacts of LM infection on morphological and functional changes of lymphatic vessels remain unexplored. In this study, we found that LM infection not only induces meningeal and mesenteric lymphangiogenesis in mice, but also impairs meningeal lymphatic vessels (MLVs)-mediated macromolecules drainage. Interestingly, we found that the genes associated with lymphatic vessel development and function, such as Gata2 and Foxc2, were downregulated, suggesting that LM infection may affect cellular polarization and valve development. On the other hand, photodynamic ablation of MLVs exacerbated inflammation and bacterial load in the brain of mice with LM infection. Overall, our findings indicate that LM infection induces lymphangiogenesis and may affect cell polarization, cavity formation, and valve development during lymphangiogenesis, ultimately impairing MLVs drainage.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the correlation between clinical phenotypes and genotypes among 46 children with SCN1A-related developmental epileptic encephalopathy (DEE). METHODS: Clinical data of 46 children with DEE and SCN1A variants identified at the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center between January 2018 and June 2022 were collected. The children were grouped based on their age of onset, clinical manifestations, neurodevelopmental status, and results of genetic testing. The correlation between SCN1A genotypes and clinical phenotypes was analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 46 patients, 2 children (4.35%) had developed the symptoms before 3 months of age, 42 (91.30%) were between 3 to 9 months, and 2 cases (4.35%) were after 10 months. Two cases (4.35%) presented with epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizures (EIMFS), while 44 (95.7%) had presented with Dravet syndrome (DS), including 28 cases (63.6%) with focal onset (DS-F), 13 cases (29.5%) with myoclonic type (DS-M), 1 case (2.27%) with generalized type (DS-G), and 2 cases (4.55%) with status epilepticus type (DS-SE). Both of the two EIMFS children had severe developmental delay, and among the DS patients, 7 cases had normal development, while the remaining had developmental delay. A total of 44 variants were identified through genetic sequencing, which included 16 missense variants and 28 truncating variants. All EIMFS children had carried the c.677C>T (p.Thr226Met) missense variant. In the DS group, there was a significant difference in the age of onset between the missense variants group and the truncating variants group (P < 0.05). Missense variants were more common in D1 (7/15, 46.7%) and pore regions (8/15, 53.3%), while truncating variants were more common in D1 (12/28, 42.9%). Children with variants outside the pore region were more likely to develop myoclonic seizures. CONCLUSION: The clinical phenotypes of DEE are diverse. There is a difference in the age of onset between individuals with truncating and missense variants in the SCN1A gene. Missense variants outside the pore region are associated with a higher incidence of myoclonic seizures.

BACKGROUND: Cortical thickness (CT) alterations, mismatch negativity (MMN) reductions, and cognitive deficits are robust findings in first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, most studies focused on medicated patients, leaving gaps in our understanding of the interrelationships between CT, MMN, neurocognition, and psychosocial functioning in unmedicated FEP. This study aimed to employ multiple mediation analysis to investigate potential pathways among these variables in unmedicated drug-naïve FEP. METHODS: We enrolled 28 drug-naïve FEP and 34 age and sex-matched healthy controls. Clinical symptoms, neurocognition, psychosocial functioning, auditory duration MMN, and T1 structural magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. We measured CT in the superior temporal gyrus (STG), a primary MMN-generating region. RESULTS: We found a significant negative correlation between MMN amplitude and bilateral CT of STG (CT_STG) in FEP (left: r = -.709, P < .001; right: r = -.612, P = .008). Multiple mediation models revealed that a thinner left STG cortex affected functioning through both direct (24.66%) and indirect effects (75.34%). In contrast, the effects of the right CT_STG on functioning were mainly mediated through MMN and neurocognitive pathways. CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral CT_STG showed significant association with MMN, and MMN plays a mediating role between CT and cognition. Both MMN alone and its interaction with cognition mediated the effects of structural alterations on psychosocial function. The decline in overall function in FEP may stem from decreased CT_STG, leading to subsequent MMN deficits and neurocognitive dysfunction. These findings underline the crucial role of MMN in elucidating how subtle structural alterations can impact neurocognition and psychosocial function in FEP.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is originating from oral mucosal epithelial cells. Autophagy plays a crucial role in cancer treatment by promoting cellular self-degradation and eliminating damaged components, thereby enhancing therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we aim to identify a novel autophagy-related biomarker to improve OSCC therapy. METHODS: We firstly utilized Cox and Lasso analyses to identify that ATF6 is associated with OSCC prognosis, and validated the results by Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. We further identified the downstream pathways and related genes by enrichment analysis and WGCNA analysis. Subsequently, we used short interfering RNA to investigate the effects of ATF6 knockdown on proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and autophagy in SCC-9 and SCC-15 cells through cell viability assay, transwell assay, EdU incorporation assay, flow cytometry analysis, western blot analysis and immunofluorescence analysis, etc. RESULTS: Bioinformatics analyses showed that ATF6 overexpression was associated with prognosis and detrimental to survival. In vitro studies verified that ATF6 knockdown reduced OSCC cell proliferation and migration. Mechanistically, ATF6 knockdown could promote cellular autophagy and apoptosis. CONCLUSION: We propose that ATF6 holds potential as a prognostic biomarker linked to autophagy in OSCC. This study provides valuable clues for further exploration of targeted therapy against OSCC.

The dysregulation of the intestinal epithelial barrier significantly contributes to the inflammatory progression of ulcerative colitis. Recent studies have indicated that lactate, produced by gut bacteria or derived from fermented foods, plays a key role in modulating inflammation via G-protein-coupled receptor 81 (GPR81). In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential role of GPR81 in the progression of colitis and to assess the impact of lactate/GPR81 signaling on intestinal epithelial barrier function. Our findings demonstrated a downregulation of GPR81 protein expression in patients with colitis. Functional verification experiments showed that Gpr81-deficient mice exhibited more severe damage to the intestinal epithelial barrier and increased susceptibility to DSS-induced colitis, characterized by exacerbated oxidative stress, elevated inflammatory cytokine secretion, and impaired expression of tight-junction proteins. Mechanistically, we found that lactate could suppress TNF-α-induced MMP-9 expression and prevent the disruption of tight-junction proteins by inhibiting NF-κB activation through GPR81 in vitro. Furthermore, our study showed that dietary lactate could preserve intestinal epithelial barrier function against DSS-induced damage in a GPR81-dependent manner in vivo. Collectively, these results underscore the crucial involvement of the lactate/GPR81 signaling pathway in maintaining intestinal epithelial barrier function, providing a potential therapeutic strategy for ulcerative colitis.

Pre-formed V-type amylose as a kind of wall material has been reported to carry polyphenols, while the interaction mechanism between V-type amylose and polyphenol is still elusive. In this work, the formation and stability mechanism of a V7-type short amylose-resveratrol complex was investigated via isothermal titration calorimetry, molecular dynamics, and molecular docking. The results presented that two stoichiometric ratios of resveratrol to short amylose were calculated to 0.120 and 0.800, and the corresponding main driving force was hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction, respectively. The folding and unfolding conformation of V7-type short amylose chains appeared alternately during the simulation. Resveratrol tended to be bound in the short amylose helix between 40 ns and 80 ns to form a more stable complex. Hydrogen bonds between resveratrol molecule and O6 at the 22nd glucose molecule/O2 at the 24th glucose molecules and hydrophobic interaction between resveratrol molecule and glucose molecules (19th, 20th, 21st and 23rd) could be found.

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) was a commonly used non-thermal plasma (CP) technology. This paper aimed to enhance the biological activity of apricot polysaccharides (AP) by using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD-CP) assisted H2O2-VC Fenton reaction for degradation. The degradation conditions were optimized through response surface methodology. The molecular weight (Mw) of degraded apricot polysaccharides (DAP) was 19.71 kDa, which was 7.25 % of AP. The inhibition rate of DAP (2 mg/mL) was 82.8 ± 3.27 %, which was 106.87 % higher than that of AP. DBD-CP/H2O2-VC degradation changed the monosaccharide composition of AP and improved the linearity of polysaccharide chains. In addition, a novel apricot polysaccharide DAP-2 with a Mw of only 6.60 kDa was isolated from DAP. The repeating units of the main chain of DAP-2 were →4)-α-D-GalpA-(1 →, the branch chain was mainly composed of α-D-GalpA-(1 â†’ 2)-α-L-Rhap-(1→ connected to O-3 position →3,4)-α-D-GalpA-(1→. The complex structure formed by the combination of DAP-2 and α-glucosidase was stable. DAP-2 had a higher α-glucosidase binding ability than the acarbose. These results suggested that DAP-2 had the potential to be developed as a potential hypoglycemic functional food and drug.

The voltage-gated calcium channel CaV1.2 is essential for cardiac and vessel smooth muscle contractility and brain function. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that malfunctions of CaV1.2 are involved in brain and heart diseases. Pharmacological inhibition of CaV1.2 is therefore of therapeutic value. Here, we report cryo-EM structures of CaV1.2 in the absence or presence of the antirheumatic drug tetrandrine or antihypertensive drug benidipine. Tetrandrine acts as a pore blocker in a pocket composed of S6II, S6III, and S6IV helices and forms extensive hydrophobic interactions with CaV1.2. Our structure elucidates that benidipine is located in the DIII-DIV fenestration site. Its hydrophobic sidechain, phenylpiperidine, is positioned at the exterior of the pore domain and cradled within a hydrophobic pocket formed by S5DIII, S6DIII, and S6DIV helices, providing additional interactions to exert inhibitory effects on both L-type and T-type voltage gated calcium channels. These findings provide the structural foundation for the rational design and optimization of therapeutic inhibitors of voltage-gated calcium channels.

Diodes based on p-n junctions are fundamental building blocks for numerous circuits, including rectifiers, photovoltaic cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and photodetectors. However, conventional doping techniques to form p- or n-type semiconductors introduce impurities that lead to Coulomb scattering. When it comes to low-dimensional materials, controllable and stable doping is challenging due to the feature of atomic thickness. Here, by selectively depositing dielectric layers of Y2O3 and AlN, direct formation of wafer-scale carbon-nanotube (CNT) diodes are demonstrated with high yield and spatial controllability. It is found that the oxygen interstitials in Y2O3, and the oxygen vacancy together with Al-Al bond in AlN/Y2O3 electrostatically modulate the intrinsic CNTs channel, which leads to p- and n-type conductance, respectively. These CNTs diodes exhibit a high rectification ratio (>104) and gate-tunable rectification behavior. Based on these results, we demonstrate the applicability of the diodes in electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and photodetection.

BACKGROUND: This study seeks to investigate the impacts of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury and uncover the mechanisms involved. METHODS: Mice in the I/R groups were orally administered low and high doses of L.reuteri (L.reuteri-low and L. reuteri-hi; 1 × 1010 CFU/d and 1 × 1011 CFU/d), for 4 weeks prior to surgery. Following this, mice in the model group were treated with an Nrf2 inhibitor (ML-385), palmitoylcarnitine, or a combination of both. RESULTS: After treatment with L. reuteri, mice exhibited reduced levels of serum aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, as well as a lower Suzuki score and apoptosis rate. L. reuteri effectively reversed the I/R-induced decrease in Bcl2 expression, and the significant increases in the levels of Bax, cleaved-Caspase3, p-p65/p65, p-IκB/IκB, p-p38/p38, p-JNK/JNK, and p-ERK/ERK. Furthermore, the administration of L. reuteri markedly reduced the inflammatory response and oxidative stress triggered by I/R. This treatment also facilitated the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. L. reuteri effectively counteracted the decrease in levels of beneficial gut microbiota species (such as Blautia, Lachnospiraceae NK4A136, and Muribaculum) and metabolites (including palmitoylcarnitine) induced by I/R. Likewise, the introduction of exogenous palmitoylcarnitine demonstrated a beneficial impact in mitigating hepatic injury induced by I/R. However, when ML-385 was administered prior to palmitoylcarnitine treatment, the previously observed effects were reversed. CONCLUSION: L. reuteri exerts protective effects against I/R-induced hepatic injury, and its mechanism may be related to the promotion of probiotic enrichment, differential metabolite homeostasis, and the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, laying the foundation for future clinical applications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and to establish a non-invasive tool for the screening of NAFLD in an older adult population. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A total of 131,161 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants were randomly divided into training and validation sets (7:3). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method was used to screen risk factors. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to develop a nomogram, which was made available online. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis were used to validate the discrimination, calibration, and clinical practicability of the nomogram. Sex and age subgroup analyses were conducted to further validate the reliability of the model. RESULTS: Nine variables were identified for inclusion in the nomogram (age, sex, waist circumference, body mass index, exercise frequency, systolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, alanine aminotransferase, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values were 0.793 and 0.790 for the training set and the validation set, respectively. The calibration plots and decision curve analyses showed good calibration and clinical utility. Subgroup analyses demonstrated consistent discriminatory ability in different sex and age subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: This study established and validated a new nomogram model for evaluating the risk of NAFLD among older adults. The nomogram had good discriminatory performance and is a non-invasive and convenient tool for the screening of NAFLD in older adults.

Qingyuan partridge chicken (QYM) is a highly regarded native breed in China, highly esteemed for its exceptional breeding characteristics. However, the investigation into the selection signatures and its strains remains largely unexplored. In this study, blood sampling, DNA extracting, and high-depth resequencing were performed in 27 QYMs. Integrating the genomic data of 14 chicken (70 individuals) breeds from other researches, to analyze the genetic structure, selection signatures, and effects of selective breeding within QYM and its 3 strains (QYMA, QYMB, and QYMC). Population structure analysis revealed an independent QYM cluster, which exhibited distinct from other breeds, with each of its 3 strains displaying distinct clustering patterns. Linkage disequilibrium analysis highlighted QYMB's notably slower decay rate, potentially influenced by selection pressure from various production indicators. Examination of selection signatures uncovered genes and genetic mechanisms associated with genomic changes resulting from extensive selective breeding within the QYM and its strains. Intriguingly, diacylglycerol kinase beta (DGKB) and catenin alpha 2 (CTNNA2) were identified as commonly selected genes across the 3 QYM strains, linked to energy metabolism, muscle development, and fat metabolism. Our research validates the substantial impact of selective breeding on QYM and its strains, concurrently identifying genomic regions and signaling pathways associated with their distinctive characters. This research also establishes a fundamental framework for advancing yellow-feathered broiler breeding strategies.

BACKGROUND: Dermatomyositis (DM) is an infrequent disease subgroup of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies characterized by distinct skin lesions. However, high heterogeneity makes clinical diagnosis and treatment of DM very challenging. OBJECTIVES: Unsupervised classification in DM patients and analysis of key factors related to clinical outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted between 2017 and 2022 at the Department of Rheumatology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University. 162 DM patients were enrolled for unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis. In addition, we divided the clinical outcomes of DM patients into four subgroups: withdrawal, stabilization, aggravation, and death, and compared the clinical profiles amongst the subgroups. RESULTS: Out of 162 DM patients, three clusters were defined. Cluster 1 (n = 40) was mainly grouped by patients with prominent muscular involvement and mild Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). Cluster 2 (n = 72) grouped patients with skin rash, anti-Melanoma Differentiation Associated protein 5 positive (anti-MDA5+), and Rapid Progressive Interstitial Lung Disease (RP-ILD). Cluster 3 (n = 50) grouped patients with the mildest symptoms. The proportion of death increased across the three clusters (cluster 3 < cluster 1 < cluster 2). LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY: The number of cases was limited for the subsequent construction and validation of predictive models. We did not review all skin symptoms or pathological changes in detail. CONCLUSIONS: We reclassified DM into three clusters with different risks for poor outcome based on diverse clinical profiles. Clinical serological testing and cluster analysis are necessary to help clinicians evaluate patients during follow-up and conduct phenotype-based personalized care in DM.

BACKGROUND: Although dopaminergic disturbances are well-known in schizophrenia, the understanding of dopamine-related brain dynamics remains limited. This study investigates the dynamic coactivation patterns (CAPs) associated with the substantia nigra (SN), a key dopaminergic nucleus, in first-episode treatment-naïve patients with schizophrenia (FES). METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 84 FES and 94 healthy controls (HCs). Frame-wise clustering was implemented to generate CAPs related to SN activation or deactivation. Connectome features of each CAP were derived using an edge-centric method. The occurrence for each CAP and the balance ratio for antagonistic CAPs were calculated and compared between two groups, and correlations between temporal dynamic metrics and symptom burdens were explored. RESULTS: Functional reconfigurations in CAPs exhibited significant differences between the activation and deactivation states of SN. During SN activation, FES more frequently recruited a CAP characterized by activated default network, language network, control network, and the caudate, compared to HCs (F = 8.54, FDR-p = 0.030). Moreover, FES displayed a tilted balance towards a CAP featuring SN-coactivation with the control network, caudate, and thalamus, as opposed to its antagonistic CAP (F = 7.48, FDR-p = 0.030). During SN deactivation, FES exhibited increased recruitment of a CAP with activated visual and dorsal attention networks but decreased recruitment of its opposing CAP (F = 6.58, FDR-p = 0.034). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that neuroregulatory dysfunction in dopaminergic pathways involving SN potentially mediates aberrant time-varying functional reorganizations in schizophrenia. This finding enriches the dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia from the perspective of brain dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Over the past several decades, more research focuses have been made on the inflammation/immune hypothesis of schizophrenia. Building upon synaptic plasticity hypothesis, inflammation may contribute the underlying pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Yet, pinpointing the specific inflammatory agents responsible for schizophrenia remains a complex challenge, mainly due to medication and metabolic status. Multiple lines of evidence point to a wide-spread genetic association across genome underlying the phenotypic variations of schizophrenia. METHOD: We collected the latest genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) summary data of schizophrenia, cytokines, and longitudinal change of brain. We utilized the omnigenic model which takes into account all genomic SNPs included in the GWAS of trait, instead of traditional Mendelian randomization (MR) methods. We conducted two round MR to investigate the inflammatory triggers of schizophrenia and the resulting longitudinal changes in the brain. RESULTS: We identified seven inflammation markers linked to schizophrenia onset, which all passed the Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons (bNGF, GROA(CXCL1), IL-8, M-CSF, MCP-3 (CCL7), TNF-ß, CRP). Moreover, CRP were found to significantly influence the linear rate of brain morphology changes, predominantly in the white matter of the cerebrum and cerebellum. CONCLUSION: With an omnigenic approach, our study sheds light on the immune pathology of schizophrenia. Although these findings need confirmation from future studies employing different methodologies, our work provides substantial evidence that pervasive, low-level neuroinflammation may play a pivotal role in schizophrenia, potentially leading to notable longitudinal changes in brain morphology.
